Serbian Museum of Corfu Location and building The Serbian Museum of Corfu is located at 19 Mustoxidou Street, in the heart of the Old Town. It is housed in a three-storey neoclassical building, known as Platy Kantouni. The building was granted by the Municipality of Corfu to the Serbian state in 1993. Today it hosts both the museum and the Serbian Consulate. Its architecture adds prestige and makes it a special cultural landmark. Historical context The foundation of the museum is linked to the First World War. After the collapse of the Serbian front in 1915, about 150,000 Serbian soldiers and members of the government fled to Corfu. They stayed there for almost three years, until the end of the war. Many of them did not survive. The Serbian mausoleum was later erected on the island of Vido, where thousands of dead soldiers rest. Corfu was for that period a temporary homeland for an entire people. Exhibits In the halls of the museum are exhibited photographs, military uniforms and weapons.
