Avlaki Beach, Corfu

Location and General Characteristics

Avlaki Beach is located on the northeast coast of Corfu, between Kassiopi and Agios Stefanos. It is approximately 36 km from Corfu Town. It is a long cove with pebbles, surrounded by olive groves, cypress trees and low hills. The landscape is authentic and retains its tranquillity even in the high tourist season.

The Sea and Activities

The waters of the beach are crystal clear and deep. Ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Cool winds often blow in the afternoons, making the spot suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing. On the beach one can also find canoes, pedalos and small sailing boats for hire.

Organisation and Facilities

Although Avlaki is relatively quiet, it has basic organisation. There are two taverns on the west side serving local dishes. There are also umbrellas and sunbeds, but in limited numbers, which keeps the character of the beach more natural.

Historical and Natural Interest

The name “Avlaki” comes from a natural groove that in the past joined the sea to a small lake behind the shore. Today the groove no longer exists, but the lake remains as part of the protected wetland of Hermitis. This area is home to rare bird species and is a favourite for nature walks.

Access and Routes

Access to the beach is easy, with a good road and parking available. The route offers great views of the sea and the opposite coast of Albania. From Avlaki there is also a trail that crosses the Hermit peninsula and leads to small, secluded beaches and lagoons.

Ideal for Visitors

Avlaki attracts mainly families, couples and travellers seeking tranquillity. It is not crowded and is therefore considered a “secret” refuge near Kassiopi. It offers a balance between relaxation and activities, without the noise of the more famous tourist beaches.
